“I’m planning on being reborn as a tree”,
says the homeowner, sharing her views on the importance of
sustainable living. When she purchased the home, the original cedar siding was on its way out and was no longer feasible to upkeep. The homeowner was on the market for an eco-friendly material that could resemble aged cedar without the implications of adding to deforestation of precious trees.
With the help of her trusted contractor, the homeowner decided that ACRE was the ideal wood alternative for this project.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Montauk Project replaced the existing exterior
siding of the home with ACRE in a custom-milled
tongue and groove siding profile, along with trim
and soffit applications. The project manager, Ian
Pedersen, an experienced Norwegian woodworker,
was responsible for the planning and execution of
the project.
CHALLENGE
The challenge was finding an alternative to traditional cedar siding that was as beautiful and suitable for coastal environments. Product selection is critical as coastal areas are susceptible to more moisture damage due to the high levels of humidity and salt. Sustainability was on the homeowner’s mind as much as durability. The homeowner
insisted on using greener resources for the new siding and trim. Pedersen sought out material that promised durability, ease of use and straightforward installation to prevent project delays. The team was skeptical that a wood alternative could meet the requirements.
SOLUTION: ACRE BY MODERN MILL
Pederson put ACRE to the test including leaving a sample at the bottom of a lake for six weeks to find no signs of water damage, rot or cracking. “I hesitated on using ACRE when the homeowner first suggested it,” says Pedersen. “After several discussions I told her to let me put it through its paces and then we’ll see. I tried hard to disprove it. I put it out under direct sunlight, buried it, froze it in snow and I even tied it to a rock and sank it in the bottom of a lake for six weeks. After that lake test when I saw that it looked the same as when I first received it, I knew ACRE was right for this special project and we were not disappointed.”
