Color Customization in Composite Materials

March 2025

Color plays a crucial role in the visual beauty and performance of building materials. One of the key advantages of composites is their versatility—not only in durability but also in design. Unlike traditional wood, which requires frequent staining or repainting to maintain its appearance, most composite materials offer customizable color options that provide long-lasting vibrancy with minimal upkeep.

Builders and homeowners now have total control over selecting colors that match their vision. Whether aiming for a natural wood look or a bold statement, select composite materials like ACRE by Modern Mill can be stained or painted to achieve the desired aesthetic. In this blog, we’ll explore color customization possibilities with composites, how to achieve the perfect finish and the best methods for maintaining color stability over time.

How Composite Materials Handle Color

Unlike traditional wood, which can absorb stains unevenly and require frequent maintenance, composite materials offer a stable, adaptable surface for achieving the desired finish. Their uniform composition allows for consistent color application, whether through staining or painting, giving builders and homeowners the flexibility to personalize their projects.

The ability to customize color means composites can complement a wide range of architectural styles. Some may prefer finishes that highlight natural wood tones, while others might opt for more striking choices, such as deep earth tones or contemporary shades. This adaptability makes composites a reliable option for both classic and modern designs.

Long-term color retention is another major advantage. Traditional wood can fade, gray, or discolor when exposed to sun and moisture, requiring ongoing treatment. In contrast, composite materials, when finished with approved coatings, resist weathering and maintain their vibrancy for years with minimal upkeep.

Best Practices for Finishing ACRE

All composites operate differently so before jumping in to paint or stain your product, view the installation and coating guidelines for optimal performance. When staining ACRE products from Modern Mill, it’s critical to choose the right color and stain type since the material does not absorb stains as typical wood products do.

For ACRE to perform as expected and avoid the effects of excessive expansion and contraction, especially with outdoor applications, choose a water-based stain color with a Light Reflective Value (LRV) of 55 or greater, or from our approved stains list. For any other color with an LRV below 55 or if you are not sure, contact us for help and approval for use.

We recommend applying stains on a smooth flat surface. ACRE products may be finished after installation, however the viscosity of the paint could result in an uneven appearance if not monitored closely. When choosing a color for ACRE, your finish must meet the following requirements:

  • Paint/stain must be water-based.
  • Paint/stain and color must be an approved coating and color found on our website.
  • If opting for a custom color, choose from our Signature 897 Collection of colors that have been approved when made with the 897 Light Reflective Pigments and when special ordered. Go to our Custom Colors Page for more information.

What Sets ACRE Apart?

While many composite materials offer durability and low maintenance, ACRE by Modern Mill stands out due to its unique composition and superior performance. Unlike traditional wood-plastic composites (WPC) or PVC-based materials, ACRE is made from upcycled rice hulls, giving it the natural look and workability of wood while delivering exceptional resistance to moisture, pests, and environmental wear.

Many composites are prone to excessive expansion and contraction due to temperature changes, which can lead to warping, cracking, or compromised finishes. When installed and cared for properly, ACRE is engineered to minimize these issues, maintaining its shape and integrity even in extreme climates. This makes it an ideal choice for both interior and exterior applications, where long-term performance is critical.

Beyond its durability, ACRE contributes to healthier, more sustainable living spaces. Its biophilic qualities help create environments that promote physical and mental well-being, making it an excellent choice for residential and commercial projects. By integrating natural-looking materials into a space, ACRE supports a stronger connection to nature, which has been shown to reduce stress and enhance overall comfort.

Additionally, ACRE is a responsible choice for environmentally conscious builders and homeowners. Made from upcycled rice hulls in a zero-waste manufacturing facility, it provides a sustainable alternative to traditional wood without sacrificing performance or beauty. Whether used for siding, decking, or interior paneling, ACRE delivers the timeless appeal of wood while helping to protect forests and reduce environmental impact.
