“I thought it was kind of neat that you were using the rice husk as another avenue to be environmentally conscious,” says John Kavounas of Red Canoe Partners. For this Greenwich project, the builder sought a material that could deliver both environmental responsibility and long-term durability without sacrificing the warmth and character of natural materials.

Project Overview

At 99 Birch Lane, ACRE Shiplap Siding defines the upper half of the home, creating a sophisticated play of light and shadow through varying profiles and colors. Working closely with Interstate Lumber and Modern Mill, Red Canoe Partners incorporated different sizes of ACRE siding, including 2 ½” shiplap in darker tones, contrasting beautifully with lighter stained sections. The ACRE extends all the way to the peak of the gables, demonstrating the material’s versatility across the entire exterior envelope.

What drew Kavounas to ACRE was its unique composition and protective qualities. “The other component of it was PVC, so overall the product was not gonna rot. It won’t have insects and things. I thought the protective component of it was really appealing.” Made from upcycled rice husks, ACRE offered an environmentally conscious solution that intrigued the builder while delivering the performance needed for New England weather.

The design thoughtfully balances ACRE’s modern durability with natural materials like stone and brick, creating a home that feels both contemporary and grounded in traditional craftsmanship. The result is a residence that combines environmental responsibility with timeless aesthetic appeal.”
