RETHINKING THE TINY HOME WITH ACRE TM

In the hills of Temecula, California, Lifescape Builders designs custom, high-end tiny homes that hold a small footprint to the standards of full-scale luxury architecture. For its latest build, the team set out to give a compact home a refined, woodforward look built to last in the Southern California climate, and the material that brought it to life was ACRE by Modern Mill. The finished home went on to be showcased at the Orange County Tiny Home Festival, where it took home an award.

“One product, used from the front windows to the entry to the rear corner, tying the whole home together.”

Project Overview

Rather than treat ACRE as a single feature, Lifescape used it throughout the home to create one continuous material language. ACRE siding clads the home’s exterior and backside elevations, while ACRE accents frame the front windows and wrap the main entrance, running around the bifold door and across the flooring to make the entry the focal point. The same warm, wood-look finish carries all the way around the build, right down to the rear corner.

Made from upcycled rice husks, ACRE’s durable composition protects the home from water, weather, rot, and pests, delivering the look and feel of real wood with durability above it. For a custom tiny home in Southern California, that performance matters twice over: it holds its finish against sun and weather, and its fire performance makes it a strategic fit as jurisdictions tighten fire code and open up to more tiny homes.

“ACRE is a gorgeous product, and it’s made from recycled rice husks. It was really easy to work with, and the results came out amazing. We were able to use it in multiple locations: accenting the front of the house around the windows, wrapping the main entrance around the bifold door and the floors, and detailing the back corner, to really tie the whole house together. I’d recommend ACRE to just about anybody building a house, but especially for the tiny home industry: anybody looking for a high-end, woodlooking product with durability above wood, and especially anybody looking to meet fire code as the jurisdictions change and accept more tiny homes.”
