ACRE vs IPE vs Hardwood Decking: An Honest Comparison

If you are weighing IPE against other hardwoods for a new deck, you have probably also wondered whether there is an IPE decking alternative that skips the annual oiling and the rainforest sourcing without giving up the look of real wood. 

This is a straight comparison of three options: IPE, the broader family of tropical and temperate hardwoods, and ACRE, a rice-hull composite that most “IPE vs composite” guides leave out. We will cover hardness, lifespan, maintenance, heat, cost, and sustainability, and we will say plainly where IPE and hardwoods still win.

Meet the Three Contenders

IPE (pronounced “ee-pay”) is a dense tropical hardwood from Central and South America, often sold under the name Brazilian walnut. It is one of the hardest decking woods on the market, with a Janka hardness around 3,490 lbf according to The Wood Database, roughly two and a half to three times harder than red oak. 

Specific IPE decking products have earned Class A flame spread ratings in supplier ASTM E84 fire tests, and the wood resists rot and insects without chemical treatment. It is also the most expensive mainstream decking wood, and the one with the heaviest sustainability questions, which we cover below.

When people say “hardwood decking,” IPE wood is usually the headline, but it is not the only option. Cumaru (Brazilian teak) is nearly as hard and costs less. Garapa is a lighter, golden, budget-friendly choice. Tigerwood brings dramatic streaked grain. Massaranduba, mahogany, teak, and the softer temperate woods like cedar and redwood round out the category. They share IPE’s natural-wood appeal and most of its maintenance demands.

ACRE is the third contender, and the one these guides usually skip. Made by Modern Mill, ACRE is a rice-hull composite: a wood-replacement material extruded from upcycled rice hulls, a byproduct of food production, with no trees and no wood fiber in it. It is tree-free, recyclable, and made in the USA.

Unlike wood-plastic composite, it can be cut, routed, sanded, and shaped like lumber, and it takes paint or stain without a primer. It is splinter-free by design. ACRE vs IPE vs Hardwood Decking, Side by Side

Here is how the three stack up on the factors that actually drive the decision. The figures below are typical ranges. The hardest tropical hardwoods lead on raw hardness. The sections below explain what each one means in practice so you can weigh what matters for your project.

Durability and Hardness

On raw hardness, the top tropical hardwoods win, and it is not close against composite. That 3,490 lbf Janka rating means IPE shrugs off dropped tools, dog claws, and decades of foot traffic, with cumaru close behind at 3,330 lbf and a handful of other dense species further down the scale. If your only metric is how hard the surface is, a tropical hardwood is the answer. ACRE is engineered for a different priority: standing up to the ways decks actually fail. 

Hardness is not the same as durability in the field, though. The way most decks fail is not denting. It is rot at the joists, splintering as the surface ages, and cupping when the underside stays wetter than the top. 

Independent testing backs this up: Consumer Reports’ multi-year decking tests found that real wood resists flexing well but that surface wear, slipping, and weathering separate the good materials from the bad regardless of species.

This is where ACRE was engineered to behave differently. It resists water, rot, and insects, it will not splinter, and it is suitable for ground contact without sealing. Tropical hardwoods can match that resistance, but only with correct installation: 10 to 14 days of acclimation, careful spacing, and enough airflow underneath. Maintenance: What Each One Really Takes

IPE and the other tropical hardwoods are often sold as “low maintenance,” and structurally they are. Cosmetically they are not. Left alone, IPE weathers from rich brown to a silver-gray patina within months. Plenty of owners like the gray. If you want to keep the brown, you are signing up for an annual job: clean, brighten, and re-oil, with a drying window in between. In hot, high-UV regions some owners find they re-coat more than once a year to hold the color. None of that is hard, but it is real time every season, and it is the single most common source of hardwood-decking regret.

Composite and PVC flip the problem. There is no oiling, just periodic washing, which is genuinely less work. The catch is that low maintenance is not no maintenance, and the surface cannot be repaired. A deep scratch, a dropped coal, or a grease stain that sets is permanent, and the fix is replacing the whole board, which rarely matches the faded boards around it.

ACRE aims for the middle: the low upkeep of a synthetic with the repairability of wood. There is no annual oiling cycle to keep its look, and because it behaves like lumber, a scuff can be sanded out and the board refinished rather than swapped. It still needs basic cleaning. In our experience, maintenance is the factor buyers most often underestimate. People choose a board for how it looks on install day and forget they are also choosing a chore they will repeat, or not repeat, for the next 20 years.

Looks, Heat, and Comfort Underfoot

On pure looks, freshly oiled IPE is hard to beat. The deep chocolate-brown color and tight, even grain read as premium in a way that is genuinely difficult to fake, and that prestige is part of what you pay for.

The honest follow-up is that the look does not hold itself. IPE fades without oil, and composite has its own version of the problem: many composite decking boards lose color over a few seasons, and although the better capped lines now hold color longer, a faded board still stands out the moment one gets swapped. 

ACRE uses a proprietary grain that mimics real wood, ships in its natural color, and takes stain in IPE-like tones without a primer. Its color fades gradually under years of UV, and an optional clear UV-resistant coat slows that to keep it looking newer for longer, with no oil cycle to keep up. Then there is heat, which matters more than people expect. Every deck gets warm in direct sun, but synthetic composite traps and holds the most, enough that dark boards can be too hot for bare feet at midday in a Southern summer. Natural hardwoods like IPE stay the coolest of this group, a real point in their favor for a poolside or full-sun deck. ACRE lands between the two. Because it is splinter-free and slip-resistant, it suits the wet, barefoot, high-traffic spots, around pools and on busy family decks, where a slick or splintering surface is a safety issue, not just a cosmetic one.

Cost: Upfront Price vs Total Project Cost

Material price is the number everyone compares, and on that basis the order runs roughly like this. The per-square-foot figures below are typical market ranges for materials only; independent 2026 deck-cost data shows installed prices run far higher once labor is added.

IPE is so dense it dulls saw blades fast enough that carbide tooling is standard, every fastener hole has to be pre-drilled, and the boards are heavy enough that crews slow down. A hardwood deck can take noticeably longer to build than the same deck in composite or ACRE, and many builders charge accordingly or decline the job. That labor gap can rival the material cost, so compare total installed price, not the board’s sticker. ACRE, by contrast, works with standard woodworking tools, no pre-drilling ritual required.

The second is the substructure trap, which almost no seller mentions. A premium deck surface commonly cited at 40 to 75 years often sits on a pressure-treated pine frame that may rot in 15 to 20. When the frame fails, the whole deck comes apart, IPE boards and all, long before those boards were spent. If you are buying a decades-long surface, budget for a frame that lasts as long, whether that means steel framing, rot-resistant sleepers, or careful flashing and drainage. The board is only as permanent as what holds it up.

Sustainability: The Honest Version

This is the topic where bias runs deepest. IPE sellers call their wood a renewable resource that gives standing rainforest economic value. Composite makers call IPE a driver of rainforest deforestation and tout boards made from recycled plastic. Both are partly right.

Here is what is verifiable. IPE and several related “trumpet tree” species were added to CITES Appendix II, the international treaty governing trade in threatened species, at the 2022 conference, with the listing taking full effect in November 2024, when Brazil began requiring CITES export permits for newly harvested IPE.

One of the primary IPE species is endangered on the IUCN Red List. That does not make buying IPE wrong, but it does mean responsible sourcing is no longer optional. If you choose IPE or any tropical hardwood, insist on FSC-certified, legally documented stock, and expect tighter supply and higher prices as the rules bite.

Composite is not a clean escape. Premium boards can contain a high share of recycled content, which is real, but they are petroleum-based and blend wood and plastic into a hybrid that is difficult to recycle at the end of its life. It keeps some plastic out of a landfill now and usually becomes landfill later.

There is no universally best decking material, only the right match for your priorities. Use these as quick decision rules:

  • Choose IPE or a tropical hardwood if maximum hardness and the look of genuine old-growth wood matter most, you will actually keep up the annual oiling, and you can source it FSC-certified with a clear conscience about the price and supply.
  • Choose cumaru or garapa if you want most of IPE’s performance and natural look for less money, and you accept the same maintenance.
  • Choose composite or PVC if hands-off upkeep is the whole point and you can live with a board that gets hot, cannot be refinished, and reads as synthetic up close.
  • Choose ACRE if you want a natural wood look and the workability of lumber, but with low maintenance, a splinter-free and slip-resistant surface, and tree-free sourcing.

And a few honest “walk away” signals: skip IPE if you know you will not oil it, because you are paying a premium for a finish you will let fade. Skip composite for a full-sun, barefoot deck in a hot climate. And whatever surface you pick, do not put it on a frame that will rot first.

The decking debate is usually framed as IPE versus composite, natural versus synthetic. That leaves out a third path: a tree-free, low-maintenance, splinter-free board that works like wood and looks like it too. IPE will still be the right call for buyers who want the hardest, most prestigious natural surface and will maintain it.
